Alfalfa SproutsYesterday was the first time I bought alfalfa to mix with my salad. I was originally put off with the raw green smell but decided to experiment with lots of greens and fruits like apricot and raisins. This was all because I heard sprouts would aid in eczema and other skin related problems like acne. Surprisingly, I found the taste of alfalfa sprouts once they were in the salad to blend very well with the rest of the greens.

A quick search on the internet also convinced me to try alfalfa. Alfalfa (also known as Medicago Sativa) is a perennial flowering plant native to Iran. It can live from 5 to 12 years. Currently, alfalfa is grown as forage for cattle but in its sprouting form, it has numerous nutritional benefits to humans.

In a small transparent box, alfalfa looks frail and pale with their white and green shoots. These shoots contain starches, oils and nutrients that help the plant grow.     Except that some of the saponins in alfalfa are toxigenic if consumed in high amounts. Inorganic alfalfa is especially prone to be infected. Anywayz they are not the fastest of sprouts to grow.

    Because of the above 3 reasons i think Alfalfa sprouts are definitely over-sold.

    We all are much better off consuming different types of sprouts. There is so much to explore & enjoy in the sprouting world.

    Great site. Please could you advise on the exact type of spouts you think are the best? I’m slightly concerned about the saponons in alfalfa….are there other spouts with no toxins…
