Myth: Chocolate lacks any nutritional value.


Fact:
Chocolate is a good source of magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. It also contains polyphenols (an antioxidant also found in tea and red wine) that have been associated with a decreased risk of coronary disease. An average chocolate bar contains about the same amount of antioxidants as a 5-ounce glass of red wine.

While it is true that chocolate does contain both fat and sugar, not all fats and sugars are created equal. The fat found in chocolate is primarily stearic acid, which has been shown to have a neutral effect on cholesterol levels. Additionally, the sugar found in chocolate is typically in the form of sucrose, which is broken down and utilized by the body in a similar manner as other forms of sugar.

A daily serving of dark chocolate, which contains more antioxidants than milk chocolate, can also help lower blood pressure and improve insulin resistance according to a joint study between Tufts University in Boston and the University of L’Aquila in Italy. The findings do not suggest that people with high blood pressure consume dark chocolate in lieu of taking their prescribed medication, but that the flavonoids in dark chocolate may have a positive effect on blood pressure and insulin resistance.

Choosing the Right Chocolate

Not all chocolate is created equal. When choosing chocolate, opt for dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa solids. The higher the percentage of cocoa solids, the more antioxidants and minerals the chocolate will contain. Additionally, avoid chocolate that contains added sugars and unhealthy fats such as hydrogenated oils.

The nutritional value of chocolate is often misunderstood. While it is true that chocolate contains fat and sugar, it is also a good source of essential minerals and powerful antioxidants. Choosing high-quality dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa solids can provide numerous health benefits.
